US hip-hop stars speak out against planned hip-hop museum
A group of major hip-hop legends in the US have been making their feelings known about plans for the development of a hip-hop museum in New York. They argue that the museum will have no credence and will be ‘illegitimate’ because none of the protesters have been consulted about the plans or asked for their input into the process.
At one press conference KRS-One spoke on behalf of the ‘temple of hip-hop’ which includes legendary stars like Afrika Bambaata, Grandmaster Flash and Kool Herc and argued that as the forerunners of the scene and an inspiration to generations of artists who followed them, they have been trying to get the wheels in motion for a hip-hop museum for more than 25 years. They argued that the planned project, which is to be developed in the South Bronx, is nothing more than a money spinner.
The team behind the proposed museum argue in its defence that it will be a showcase for ‘all aspects of the culture of hip-hop – music, technology, sports, graffiti art, fashion, break dancing and language, including vinyl records, handwritten lyrics, boom boxes, clothing and costumes...’
KRS-One wants to get together with the team behind the project so that the pioneers and people who know most about the history and development of the genre can have their say and give the project leaders the benefit of their considerable knowledge. He hopes that this will help all concerned create an appropriate and worthy monument to the scene.
