Radiohead album tops US music chart

The English alternative band, Radiohead, has led the US music charts with the official launch of the ‘In Rainbows’ album, initially sold by means of the Internet for the charge chosen by fans.

The album marketed 122,000 copies in its first week, replacing Mary J. Blige from the number one spot.

It is Radiohead’s second US album chart topper following their album entitled ‘Kid A’ in 2000 that sold 207,000 initial copies.

Analysts tell the comparatively meek sales of the ‘In Rainbows’ album is due to its previous high-profile digital launch in the Internet.

The album has also come out with a traditionally quiet time for the US album charts; while approximately 10,000 copies are sold in the early hours after some music retailers place it on their shelves even before its official launching date.

The sales score also falls substantially short from Radiohead's 2003 album entitled ‘Hail to the Thief’, which made its first appearance in the US music chart at number three, along with the first week sales of 300,000 that recorded a career most excellent for alternative bands.

In October, Radiohead took the choice to make ‘In Rainbows’ accessible through their website, permitting fans to disburse what they thought each track’s worth, even though it was nothing.

Radiohead’s frontman Thom Yorke thought that launching the album exclusively online would have been ‘foolish’, and that it is significant for Radiohead to still prepare for a physical release available.

The band has refused to provide a statement on how many instances ‘In Rainbows’ is downloaded or how much they have collected from the experiment.
