No more free Radiohead to download
01 May 2008
After Radiohead allowed the free downloading of their album “Rainbows” last year, front man Thom Yorke recently announced that their future releases will be sold.
Although many commented that the band’s action in 2007 could make a big impact on the music industry, Yorke made the move seem insignificant now.
“I think it was a one-off response to a particular situation", he said in an interview for the “Hollywood Reporter” this week.
He added, "It was one of those things where everyone was asking us what we were going to do".
For many, the issue becomes trivial people might think that all it takes for the band to excite the industry is to ask them “What are you going to do”?
In retrospect, Radiohead’s action was not as life-changing or revolutionary as many perceived it to be. Nonetheless, their decision left a mark on others in the industry. For example, since the bands Nine Inch Nails, Charlatans, Raconteurs, and Gnarls Barkley also experimented on free albums; and Coldplay recently released their newest song “Violet Hill” as a free download.
After all is said and done, Yorke appeared to be okay with the way things are.
“I don't think it would have the same significance now, if we choose to give something away again. It was a moment in time", he said.
